Are you looking for a way to help the community?
If so, consider becoming a volunteer.
Several nonprofit organizations around our Millersville apartments help people or animals in need. They include:
Anne Arundel County Food Bank
The Anne Arundel County Food Bank, located a 14-minute drive away, works to eliminate hunger. Established in 1986, this organization helps both families and individuals get out of crisis and become self-sufficient. It delivers food to pantries, soup kitchens, and backpack programs, and serves over one million meals every year.
The food bank has a small paid staff and depends greatly on volunteers. There are several opportunities including cooking, sorting food, and answering phones.
Crofton Community Library
Since 2002, the Crofton Community Library has loaned millions of books and offered exciting adult programs. Last year, it welcomed over 250,000 patrons who checked out 401,961 items.
The Anne Arundel County Public Library has over 500 volunteers who work at fifteen libraries. Most of the tasks require being able to lift, bend, and stand for long periods. Duties include unpacking boxes, filing, and searching the collection for requested materials. The Crofton Community Library is a 17-minute drive away.
SPCA of Anne Arundel County
The SPCA, located a 23-minute drive away, is the county’s largest and oldest welfare organization. It provides shelter for homeless pets, and there’s no time limit on how long an animal is available for adoption. The SPCA opened in 1920, and it also works to pass laws that provide companion animals with humane treatment.
The shelter depends on the community’s support and has an active volunteer force. The volunteers receive training and work at least six hours a month. Duties include dog walking, cat socializing, and caring for the smallest animals such as hamsters and guinea pigs.
